API Lifecycle Management: The Four Practices cover

API Lifecycle Management: The Four Practices

A platform leader's guide to running the lifecycle as one system. Four practices, a five-question diagnostic, and what to do this month.

SIX CHALLENGES

Where API lifecycle programs come apart

Most enterprises run the API lifecycle as disconnected projects, with separate tools, separate teams, and separate sources of truth. The seams between them are where the program comes apart. These are the six challenges we see consistently across organizations.

Challenge 1

Each stage is its own project

Design, build, test, and release each live in a different tool. Each stage has a different owner, a different source of truth, and a different opinion about what the API is.

  • Each stage has its own source of truth
  • Drift accumulates invisibly between them
  • The crisis lands on whichever team is closest to the failure

Challenge 2

Drift between sources

The spec lives in one repo. The Collection lives in a workspace nobody connected to source control. The docs live in Confluence. By integration time, downstream developers are looking at three different versions and trust none of them.

  • 31% more endpoints in production than the catalog reports (Cloudflare 2024)
  • 93% of API teams face collaboration blockers (Postman State of the API 2025)
  • 78% of teams are actively consolidating tools in their stack

Challenge 3

Governance lives adjacent to the workflow

A review board meets weekly. The queue runs longer than a sprint. When a gate takes longer than the work it's gating, developers bypass it.

  • DORA research: gates that take longer than ten minutes get bypassed mechanically
  • Programs enforcing only at CI report 3x higher developer frustration
  • Standards enforced outside the workflow create an adversarial dynamic

Challenge 4

Discovery is a Slack thread

An internal developer asks in a channel, gets three different answers, follows two dead Confluence links, and gives up in thirty minutes. The next developer builds the eighteenth payment API because the search cost was higher than the build cost.

  • 74% of organizations have more than 20% of APIs unmanaged (Axway 2024)
  • 34% of API teams cannot find existing APIs in their own organization
  • 78% of enterprises don't know how many APIs they have

Challenge 5

Tests re-authored at every stage

Unit tests live in one framework, contract tests in a second, load tests in a third, production monitors in a fourth. By the time the production monitor fires, it's asserting HTTP 200 instead of the business behavior the developer originally specified.

  • Assertion fidelity is lost at every translation
  • Coverage gaps appear at the seams between stages
  • Maintenance cost grows linearly with translation layers

Challenge 6

Agents arrive as a separate workstream

The AI team funds an initiative. The platform team gets asked halfway through to expose APIs. The inconsistencies humans had been working around (different error formats, undocumented edge cases) are hard failures for agents. The initiative slips a quarter.

  • AI user-action crawling grew 15x in 2025 (Cloudflare 2025 Year in Review)
  • 51% of organizations have deployed AI agents; only 24% design APIs with agents in mind (Postman State of the API 2025)
  • MCP SDK monthly downloads passed 97 million in early 2026
Postman has helped us make shift-left real. Test coverage and code are embedded in CI/CD, enabling both developers and testers to collaborate and run the single test collections.”

THE POSTMAN PLATFORM

One platform, the full API lifecycle

Postman replaces disconnected projects, separate tools, and multiple sources of truth with one platform that spans the API lifecycle stages.

Define captures intent before code exists and accountability stays with the team that built it.

Assign ownership before the schema exists

  • API Catalog: Open the record at intent with named owner, consumer use case, and lifecycle stage.
  • Workspaces: Organize roles, projects, and APIs in one shared surface across teams.
  • SCIM-integrated entitlements: Tie accountability to identity so ownership survives team changes.

Workspaces help you define your Postman setup around how your team(s) work together.
